A fisherman drowned off the coast of Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, on Tuesday, after he allegedly fell into the water and got entangled on his fishing line.

According to local media sources, the 59-year old Adam Ibrahim was found floating on the surface with his fishing line coiled around his neck and finger. First responders on site reported that he had a sailfish hooked on the line before he was cut free. Adam was fishing by himself.

The first responders were a pair of fishermen fishing roughly 300 metres from Adam's vessel. The two fishermen investigated the vessel after Adam suddenly went out of sight. He was previously seen on the bow of the ship, supposedly attempting to land the fish which dragged him into the water.

Reportedly, the incident occurred at approximately 1100 hrs.
