Police officer, expat arrested over mug attempt

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, arrested a police officer and a Bangladeshi citizen under suspicion of attempting to mug an expatriate worker.

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, arrested a police officer and a Bangladeshi citizen under suspicion of attempting to mug an expatriate worker.

The 26-year-old local man and the 28-year-old Bangladeshi national were arrested at approximately 1845 hrs during a special operation.

Reportedly, the two individuals tried to steal a work permit and money from another Bangladeshi citizen.

The arrested police officer holds the rank of Lance Corporal and has now been placed under temporary suspension. His case is currently being investigated by the Professional Standards Command.

The arrested Bangladeshi national does not possess proper documentation and was residing in the country illegally.

The criminal investigation concerning the case is also underway.
