Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), on Saturday, began development of the harbour construction project of Fulhadhoo, Baa Atoll.

The construction of the harbour worth MVR 48.2 million was contracted to MTCC on July 2019, by the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure. The agreement was signed between the Planning Ministry's Director General Shana Farooq and MTCC's Chief Executive Officer Hassan Shah.

According to the project outline on MTCC's website, the project involves 51,861 cubic metres of dredging, a 108-metre breakwater, 302-metre revetment, and a 223-metre quay wall. A ramp, interlocking pavements, mooring blocks, navigational masts, harbour lights and a concrete walkway bridge will also be installed on the island.

As per Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations, the EIA report and the decision statement from the Ministry of Environment must be publicly disclosed prior to commencement of a project. However, both the Environment Ministry and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not publicize the report.

EPA's Assistant Director General Ibrahim Mohamed confirmed the regulation's requisite to publicize the documents but claimed the EIA report was facing delays in its upload due to "technical" issues.
