The Criminal Court on Thursday commenced efforts to close all currently pending cases by the end of September 2020.

The Court revealed that their target was to reiew all cases that have remained pending for three years by the end of March, cases pending for two years to be concluded by the end of June, and ensure that all cases lodged within the past year are concluded by the end of September this year.

According to statistics from the Criminal Court, over 1,300 cases were successfully closed over the past year, while more than 1,600 cases remained unresolved.

Of all unresolved cases, 27 have remained pending for five years, while 228 cases have remained unresolved for three years. A total of 774 pending cases were lodged over a year ago, and a total of 662 cases were submitted within the past year.

The Criminal Court explained that the reason for the backlog was not having enough judges. Currently, while nine judges sit in the Criminal Court, the court is hoping to get an extra judge.
