The island council of Hoarafushi, Haa Alif Atoll, launched a program to plant 100,000 trees in the island on Tuesday.

The program was inaugurated by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula, also a local on the island, at a ceremony held on the island yesterday.

Parliament member for Hoarafushi constituency MP Ahmed Saleem also participated in the ceremony.

According to Hoarafushi Island Council President Mohamed Waheed, the program to plant 100,000 trees was initiated with support from local residents of the island, along with assistance from residents from neighbouring islands of Thuraakunu and Uligamu and nearby resorts.

"The tree-planting activities will take place on weekends", said Waheed, stating that 30 trees will be planted per resident in order to reach their goal of 100,000 plants.

"We are hoping to achieve our target by the beginning of Ramadan", he said.

"The trees will be planted in the area reclaimed for the construction of Hoarafushi Airport".
