A retail outlet located in the premises of Male' Prison was vandalised on Monday night after Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) officers stationed at Male' Prison were verbally threatened.

Reportedly, a group of individuals perpetrated these actions on two consecutive days starting from January 5.

An MCS media official stated that the window of the shop was shattered after a pavement stone was thrown at it. The shop window was similarly shattered on the previous as well.

The retail outlet, located in Annex 1, is exclusively designated for the use of employees at the Male' Prison.

MCS has reported the matter to the police.

The aforementioned incidents are presumably related to the recent outbursts of unrest at Maafushi Prison.

On January 5, authorities reported the use of pepper spray in an attempt to control an altercation between inmates at Maafushi Prison.

According to MSC inmates on remand for an investigation began 'rioting' to express dissatisfaction over being remanded for long periods without investigation, and the failure of MCS to arrange access to medical treatment.

Unconfirmed rumours assert that approximately 100 inmates at Male' Prison are staging a hunger strike in solidarity with Maafushi Prison inmates.
