The Ministry of Education, on Monday, revealed that 83 percent of all morning session students participated in the school breakfast programme during the academic year of 2019.

As per statistics released by the ministry, a total of 46,259 students from 213 government schools joined the programme. Only 9,549 pupils from the morning sessions did not participate.

During the first semester of 2019, breakfast was provided in 25 schools as part of a pilot study. The government extended the programme to all public schools in the second semester.

Minister of Education Aishath Ali previously stated that the breakfast programme was launched to bring about a positive change to students' growth and discipline.

"The results of this programme show that students' concentration during lessons increased due to the breakfast. The number of students who are late for school decreased. Number of students who faint in assemblies decreased. Number of students who visit the health room because of headaches and stomachaches decreased".

Breakfast provision in government schools is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. A budget of MVR 123 million was allocated for the first year of this programme.
