President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday signed the declaration in relation to Article 22 of the 'Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment'.

The declaration reads that the Maldivian government recognises the competence of the Committee Against Torture to receive complaints or such submissions from individuals subjected to torture, provided that the victims were under the jurisdiction of Maldives.

The president signed the declaration under Article 22 of CAT to fulfil the recommendations made by the Committee in their Concluding Observations after reviewing the Initial Report of Maldives in November 2018.

CAT is an international human rights treaty under the review of the United Nations, which aims to prevent torture and other acts of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.
