Minister Shahid meets Sri Lankan PM, foreign minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Thursday, met with the Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Relations Dinesh Gunawardena.

During the meeting held at the Sri Lankan foreign ministry, Minister Shahid, congratulated Minister Gunawardena and deliberated on exploring further avenues for cooperation, particularly those related to trade, investments and people to people contact.

Both ministers agreed to convene the Sri Lanka – Maldives Joint Commission in the first quarter of 2020. The Joint Commission focuses on bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, fisheries, education, health, employment, tourism and culture.

The ministers also expressed mutual desire to strengthen existing bilateral ties.

Additionally, Minister Gunawardena accepted Minister Shahid's invitation to undertake a visit to Maldives during the meeting.

Over the course of his three-day official visit to Sri Lanka, the foreign minister has paid courtesy calls on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The minister is also scheduled to meet Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya and Minister of Mahaweli, Agriculture Development and Internal Trade Chamal Rajapaksa.

Foreign Minister Shahid was accompanied to both meetings by Ambassador of Maldives in Sri Lanka Omar Abdul Razzak and Deputy Head of Mission Khadeeja Najeeha.
