Over 3000 jobs will be created by the end of Maldives’ main airport's development and expansion projects, announced economic minister Mohamed Saeed.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Body Scanner placed in Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA)’s Arrivals Hall on Monday, the minister noted that 90 percent of the airport’s workforce of 2,300 employees are local.

“Around 6000 job opportunities will be created by the end of this airport development project. This means an additional 3000 jobs here,” he said.

Stating that the government has invested approximately USD 90 million (MVR 1.3 billion) for INIA’s development, the minister commended President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s sanctioned project in collaboration with Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) to develop a second runway at INIA, which will be a Code F runway measuring 65 metres in breadth allowing the largest aircrafts to land.

Minister Saeed added that land reclamation for the new runway is mostly finished. The newly reclaimed land will increase airport island Hulhule’s land area by a third.
