MIRA appoints new deputy chairperson to Board of Directors

Leena Mohamed Zahir Hussain on Tuesday was appointed as Deputy Chairperson of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA)'s Board of Directors.

Leena, who holds an MBA from Charles Sturt University, Australia, and Bachelor's Degree in Business from University of Southern Queensland, Australia, first served at the Finance Ministry for 14 years, where she held key positions including Assistant Director and Director General.

She later joined MIRA and served as Director General of Administration and Support Service Division, Financial Executive, and Chairperson of the Human Resource Committee. She also served on the boards of State Electric Company (STELCO) and Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).

MIRA's Board of Directors comprises of seven members: Commissioner General of Taxation, five members appointed by the president, and one member appointed by the Minister of Finance.

The amendment made to the Tax Administration Act this year grants the Finance Minister the authority to appoint MIRA's chairperson. The position was granted to the Chief Financial Budget Executive at the finance ministry, Ahmed Saruvash Adam, while Asma Shafeeu is serving as Deputy Commissioner of Taxation.
