President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Sunday, hosted a special tea for sixteen volunteers of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) at the presidential residence of Mulee'aage in capital city Male'.

Addressing the visitors, President Solih expressed gratitude for JOCV's contribution to the development of Maldivian communities.

The 'Tea with Volunteers' event was a previously held annual tradition of JOCV and the Maldives government. However, the event remained in hiatus over recent years until President Solih renewed the practice.

The event was attended by senior representatives of the government including Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer and Minister of Education Aishath Ali.

Maldives began receiving aid from JOCV as early as 1982, well before the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. During this time, hundreds of volunteers have contributed to the socio-economic development of the country across various sectors, which includes programmes in education such as teaching physical education, music and computer studies in various islands.

Moreover, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) sent five Maldivians to participate in its 'Knowledge Co-Creation Program (Young Leaders)' in the field of Rural Development, in October 2019.
