Male' Henveiru South constituency parliament representative Hussain Shameem, on Monday, put forth an emergency motion to the parliament concerning extremism in Maldives.

Per the motion, MP Shameem highlighted two cases in light of recent events in Maldives; a vandalism incident in which the Islamic State (IS) logo was spray-painted on several residences in Maaungoodhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, and the 13-year-old child bride that was impregnated.

MP Shameem noted that the vandalism incited fear among the citizens of Maaungoodhoo. He further highlighted concerns that although the Constitution clearly states children must be given extra protection from family and state, incidents of exploitation, taking illicit advantage of children and endangering children have increased.

Additionally, Shameem expressed unease over the decision to place the 13-year-old girl impregnated with those responsible for initially endangering her for a period of one year.

The Parliament accepted the motion with 41 votes in favour, and debates on it have commenced.

The motion called to protect children and to take serious action against those found to be involved in endangering children.
