36 cases of female harassment in 5 years: Police

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, noted that 36 cases of harassment were reported within a five-year period.

Addressing press at Iskandhar Koshi, Spokesperson and Chief Inspector of Police Izmia Zahir revealed that only a single case out of the 36, was filed at the Prosecutor General (PG)'s Office. She further highlighted that the case specifically was one submitted against a 56-year-old man on June, 2019.

The Criminal Court ordered the detention of the man over accusations of stalking and harassing a female pedestrian on the streets of capital city Male', until the end of his trial.

Moreover, the Chief Inspector revealed that while harassment cases were largely discussed on social media, official reports made to police remained relatively low.

Reported statistics on violence against women (2015-2019)

- Domestic violence: 412 cases

- Gang violence: 324 cases

- Nonconsual sharing of explicit material: 44 cases

- Blackmail: 58 cases

In addition, Izmia revealed that cases of extortion and blackmail usually involved disputes between married and non-married couples and urged citizens to report such matters at their earliest.
