Peace in Sri Lanka good for Maldives: Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid declared on Monday that "peace and prosperity in Sri Lanka is good for Maldives".

Shahid made this comment in a tweet congratulating the new president-elect of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, on winning the Sri Lankan Presidential Elections on November 16.

Expressing delight at Sri Lanka's continued "democratic tradition of smooth transfer of power", Minister Shahid stated that he was looking forward to working with the incoming government to take bilateral ties between Sri Lanka and Maldives to a new level.

The president-elect ran as the candidate from Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP), beating out ruling party candidate Sajith Premadasa with 52.25 percent of the vote, according to the final results. The brother of former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he had formerly served as a defence secretary.
