President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday declared Syria as a war zone and added two more groups as terrorist organizations under the Terrorism Act.

According to the recent amendments brought to the Terrorism Act, the President has to decide and declares war zones and terrorist organizations.

Additionally, the changes prohibit citizens from going into the dictated zones without attaining permission from the government, making it a federal offence.

Although this is the first time the president declared a war zone, 17 organizations were previously declared as terrorist groups.

The newly added organizations are Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and Huraas al-Din.

Prior to the amendment, it was a federal offence to go and take part in a war. However, with the new amendment, going to those declared zones without permission from the government can bring a sentence of five to six years in jail.
