The Civil Court sentenced the former president of Maldives Trade Union, Fuad Zahir, to two months in jail over tax evasion.

According to the verdict issued on October 22, Fuad did not pay a tax amount he owed to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) despite an earlier court order. The ruling noted that documents submitted by MIRA as well as statements from both parties proved that Fuad did not settle the payment.

This marks the second time that Fuad faced a legal sentence over disobeying a court order.

The businessman was also the first individual to be charged with tax evasion and obstructing an audit conducted by MIRA, for lying on his tax statements.
