Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs, on Thursday, finalised the decision to appoint Fathuhulla Jameel as the Commissioner General of Taxation and sent his name to the parliament floor.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated Fathuhulla, the former Director-General of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), for the position along with Assistant Commissioner of Maldives Customs Service Ismail Nashid.

The committee chose Fathuhulla for the position after holding interviews for both individuals.

After joining MIRA in 2003, Fathuhulla initially worked as a Revenue Officer. He was appointed as Director-General in 2010 after serving as a Senior Revenue Officer.

Fathuhulla has worked at Telecommunications giant Dhiraagu as a Tax, Risk and Complaints Manager since his resignation from MIRA in 2016. He holds a diploma as a Certified Accounting Technician (CAT).

The committee also chose two names from the list of six individuals nominated for the position of Deputy General of Taxation by President Solih and forwarded them to the parliament floor.

The two individuals, Asma Shaafiu and Ismail Saajidh, were the only ones who attended the interviews held by the Economic Affairs Committee.

The second amendment to the Tax Administration Act, ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on September 12, stipulates that the Commissioner General of Taxation must be appointed within 30 days of the amendment coming into effect. The aforementioned deadline has already expired.

The last person to fill this position was Yazeed Mohamed, with Hassan Zareer as Deputy Commissioner.
