National Health Insurance scheme Aasandha on Tuesday commenced "Merana' Health Scheme services for Maldivians living in Malaysia.

Until now, Merana scheme, introduced by the government to facilitate healthcare for Maldivians residing abroad, only extended to Sri Lanka and India.

According to the press statement by Aasandha, a total of MVR 150,000 is allocated for all registered residents, including MVR 10,000 for outpatients. As for inpatient services, costs will be covered upto the available amount, under the same scheme.

It was also revealed that changes were brought to some aspects in order to suit patient needs. For instance, total expense covered by Aasandha was increased to 65 percent of the bill. Aasandha added that these changes will soon be implemented in Sri Lanka and India.

Although the cashless option is not available yet in Malaysia, those registered under the Merana scheme can submit the reimbursement form with copies of medical bills to reimburse their expenses.

The official website of Aasandha now has a complete list of hospitals from which patients can seek health insurance services.
