Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday revealed that convicts had shared their concerns through 16 letters addressed to the former president.

According to Nasheed, the matter is scheduled at the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender. However, no further details were shared.

A nationwide jail audit, which detailed several points of concern regarding prisons in Maldives, reported that the state spends MVR 15,000 on each inmate per month.

Furthermore, the report declared that prisons were unsuitable for human dwelling, and highlighted discrimination between inmates.

While a number of inmates have died in the past, their families blamed the deaths on inadequate medical treatment provided by the state.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) stated that approximately 30 inmates seek medical treatment on a daily basis.
