Maldives Police Service on Saturday arrested national cricket team coach Asif Khan over allegations of sexually abusing cricket players under his tutelage.

The 46-year old Pakistani-born South African citizen was detained at Velana International Airport (VIA) by the Police while attempting to depart from Maldives.

Without identifying the perpetrator, Police revealed that an African was arrested under a court order issued Saturday over allegations of having sexually abused several individuals including minors. No further details were disclosed.

Asif Khan served as national cricket team coach since 2018 and led the national team to runner-up position at the T-20 Tri-Nation Series held at Malaysia in June 2019.

Furthermore, Maldives played the friendly cricket match against the Indian national team February as part of efforts to further sports diplomacy and cooperation between the two countries under the coaching of Asif Khan.

In addition to coaching the team, he further served as an empire for several matches.
