Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Friday attended the High-Level Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which was held on the sidelines of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Speaking at the sit-down, Minister Shahid declared that Maldives is a strong supporter of multilateralism, expressing confidence in the commitment of NAM's member states to maintain a just and equitable international order, to collaborate more closely on international peace and security, and to cooperate more closely in resolving international disputes peacefully.

In his remarks, the minister also highlighted the importance of maintaining unity within NAM and to uphold its fundamental values, while ensuring that these values and commitments are implemented within the member states.

Maldives joined NAM in 1976, at the height of the Cold War. NAM was established in 1961 as a forum that is not formally aligned or against any major power blocs, while advocating for national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
