Applications open to lease chemical warehouses in Thilafushi

Greater Male' Industrial Zone Ltd (GMIZ), on Monday, opened for applications to lease chemical warehouses from Thilafushim for the relocation of dangerous items stored in residential areas of capital Male'.

An announcement by GMIZ stated that the company is working on establishing chemical storage facilities at Thilafushi, the landfill island in the greater Male' area, which will be leased out to interested parties who submit forms.

According to the announcement, the highest priority will be given to those storing the most hazardous and dangerous chemicals.

GMIZ's Managing Director Ibrahim Rasheed previously told local media Mihaaru that there were a total of 126 godowns in Male' currently storing flammable items, adding that the government has requested to relocate 26 of the warehouses to Thilafushi as swiftly as possible.

Rasheed declared that items will be shifted to the new warehouses upon their completion within two months.

The government decided to relocate warehouses in congested Male' City storing dangerous chemicals to Thilafushi, following the tragic blaze that burned through Abadhah Fehi Magu in Henveiru Ward on September 20.

The most devastating fire-related incident in the history of capital Male' ravaged four warehouses, seven residences and displaced over 400 individuals in addition to claiming the life of Aishath Shauna, a 49-year-old woman.
