The Ministry of Environment announced that a cleanup event will be held on September 21 in celebration of this year's International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The day will kick off with a beach cleaning event organized by the ministry in collaboration with Environment Protection Agency (EPA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), European Union (EU) and Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

Government offices, companies, NGOs and schools are set to participate in the cleanup held at reclaimed suburb Hulhumale'.

Following the cleanup, EPA will conduct a waste audit and share their findings with the public.

As part of the day's activities, a forum will be held at 2000 hrs in Hulhumale' to raise awareness about coastal protection. The general public is encouraged to attend the meeting.

In addition to the events at Hulhumale', Environment Ministry is attempting to coordinate with island and atoll councils and others to host similar events.

International Coastal Cleanup Day is held on the third Saturday of every September. This year, the day falls on the 21st of the month.

The aim of marking this day is to reduce littering the beach and coastal area as well as raising awareness about the dangers to the marine environment due to irresponsible waste disposal.
