Man arrested for ‘blasphemous’ social media content

Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, arrested a 38-year-old over allegedly posting blasphemous content on social media.

The resident of Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll was apprehended under a court order and remanded for a 15-day period the following day.

Chief Inspector and Spokesperson of Police Izmia Zahir revealed that the police were also investigating threats against the individual in question.

A member of Thinadhoo's island council stated that the individual accused of expressing sacrilegious opinions only moved to the island recently.

Rumours allege that the man previously lived in Male' before moving to Thinadhoo after receiving threats concerning his expression of blasphemous opinions.
