Opposition party People's National Congress (PNC) on Monday elected former Managing Director of state-run Fenaka Corporation LTD, Mohamed Nimal as Vice President of the party.
Nimal was elected to fill the vacant post previously held by Villimale' MP Ahmed Nihan following his resignation. Nihan has since joined the government coaltion's Jumhooree Party (JP).
According to PNC, Nimal was elected Vice President via a secret vote by the party's council members.
With Nimal's election, he shares the Vice President post with former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Maldives Mohamed Hussain Shareef, former Economic Minister and incumbent Maavah MP Mohamed Saeed and former Baarah MP Ibrahim Sujau.
Former Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla serves as incumbent President of PNC.
Nimal most recently served as Minister Councillor at the Sri Lankan embassy during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.
During Yameen's government, Nimal first served as Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation. He was sacked from the post in the wake of corruption allegations and cases filed against him at the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
Nimal denied all allegations against him.
He was later appointed Deputy Minister of Tourism on October 24, 2016.
Additionally, he also served as the Managing Director of Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC).
