President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, forwarded the name of Drug Court Judge Mahaz Ali to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for consultation on appointing him to the Supreme Court.

The nomination was made to sill the vacant slot left by the recently dismissed Judge Abdulla Didi.

Article 148 of the Constitution authorises the president to appoint judges to the Supreme Court after consulting JSC and securing a majority vote in parliament.

Mahaz, a native of Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, was among the first judges appointed after the Drug Court was formed under the Drug Act and is the current Secretary-General of the Judges Association. He previously worked at the Prosecutor General's Office.

A new amendment to the Judicature Act increasing the number of Supreme Court judges from five to seven was ratified on July 23, 2019. Former High Court Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir and former Civil Court Judge Aisha Shujune Muhammad were appointed on Wednesday to fill these vacancies.

The two are the first female justices to be appointed to the top court.
