Thulhaadhoo MP and the parliamentary representative at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Hisaan Hussain, on Wednesday, proposed three measures against religious extremism to the parliament.

Hisaan asserted that the widespread existence of extremist elements in Maldives was proven by the summary report submitted concerning the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan by the Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.

The JSC representative asserted that she had no intention of remaining idle in response to the issues presented in the summary report.

Hisaan's first proposal involved the identification of police regulations and other relevant laws in need of amendment and initiating necessary changes after a thorough analysis of the presidential commission's report.

The lawmaker also suggested that special procedures be formulated and legislated to investigate issues noted by the commission.

The final proposal called for all relevant state institutions to form a task force to monitor progress on action taken concerning the problems noted by the report.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) lawmaker requested other MP's to support her proposals.

"What Rilwan said that day is now an officially documented reality we acknowledge", stated Hisaan.

The aforementioned statement most likely referred to one of Rilwan's tweets from 2007 in which he states, "They are here, it is a threat to this country, what can we do"?

The tweet is believed to be in reference to religious extremists.

Rilwan went missing five years prior on August 8, 2014, after which his family and friends initiated and actively participated in numerous efforts to confirm the whereabouts of the missing journalist.

The commission's President Husnu al-Suood recently revealed at a press conference that evidence indicated Rilwan was murdered by a local group affiliated with al-Qaeda, a militant extremist multi-national organisation.
