President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday changed the name and mandate of 'Marine Research Centre' to 'Maldives Marine Research Institute' effective from August 29.
The new mandate tasks Maldives Marine Research Institute with researching and collecting scientific data and specimens in regards to sea life and the marine environment. It also includes protecting marine species in threat of extinction, ensuring fishing mechanisms which protect the marine environment and establishing ecosystem-based management in Maldives.
Moreover, the mandate is responsible for conducting research work, as well as providing expert opinions on ways to further develop agriculture across Maldives.
MMRI will also provide information and oversee the work of international scientific bodies.
