Police probe case over MVR 450,000 stolen from boat

Maldives Police Service, on Wednesday, launched an investigation into MVR 450,000 stolen from a boat which departed to Bilehdhoo, Faafu Atoll, from capital city Male'.

According to Police spokesperson, the money was stolen from a cupboard located on the boat. No arrests have been made yet.

'Endheri' boat's skipper Yoonus Mohamed, explained that it departed on Monday loaded with cargo and a couple of passengers. The boat made a short two and a half-hour transit at Feeali, Faafu Atoll, during the journey.

He first became aware of the missing money on Tuesday morning. "I checked the cupboard to take the money home but it was not there", said Yoonus.

Yoonus noted a passenger observing him as he secured the money inside the cupboard, situated next to the helm of the ship. He added that the passenger may have observed him stow away the key before leaving.

Contemplating over the period in which the robbery occurred, Yoonus stated that he left the helm for 30 minutes when he made landfall in Feeali and the two hours he slept before departing to Bilehdhoo.

A total of nine bundles, amounting to MVR 50,000 each, were reported stolen.
