Parliament on Tuesday announced the decision to extend the ongoing second term by seven days, through a unanimous decision from 72 lawmakers.

According to parliament regulations, the second term was scheduled to conclude in August, breaking off into a two-month recess before beginning its third term in October.

Following the extension, the second session of the 19th parliament sitting will draw to a close on September 5.

The motion was passed due to multiple policies and resolutions currently lodged at the parliament for debate, including the motion to dismiss Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Didi.

Parliamentarians receive a four-month leave period each year, with normal sittings scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

However, the legislative body has slated sittings for the remaining days prior to the two-month recess.
