Parliament on Wednesday, passed a bill to transfer the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) under the mandate of Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.

In its current state, the National Social Health Insurance Act (No. 15/2011) tasks Ministry of Health with operating NSPA.

However, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration shifted NSPA's operations under Gender Ministry without amendments to relevant laws and regulations.

Lawmaker for Manadhoo Constituency Ahmed Haroon submitted the bill to amend the act.

No amendments were made by the parliament's Social Affairs Committee, which studied the bill later passed by 62 MPs.

NSPA was established to administer the National Health Insurance Scheme 'Aasandha' and to conduct Social Protection programmes such as providing financial assistance to single parents, foster parents, people with disabilities, and food subsidization.
