Former Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passed away late Tuesday.

The 67-year-old passed away while undergoing treatment after suffering from cardiac arrest.

She served as Minister for the first five years of Narendra Modi's first term as Prime Minister and was filling the post until May this year.

According to reports, Swaraj did not take part in the elections held earlier this year due to poor health.

She visited Maldives on two occasions and worked to expand the diplomatic relationship between Maldives and India.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and several other government officials send condolences to her family and people of India.

Swaraj has earned admiration from the general public and was closer to Indian citizens than most politicians due to her avid use of Twitter.

She was known to reach out directly to Indians overseas who needed diplomatic assistance during her time as External Affairs Minister.

The beloved politician was the second female to hold office after Indira Gandhi. She was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. When she was 25 years old, she became the youngest cabinet minister of Indian state of Haryana.
