President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday, appointed Abdul Maaniu Hussain as the lawyers' representative for the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The President awarded the letter of appointment at a ceremony held at the President’s Office.

Maaniu took his oath in front of Supreme Court Judge Ahmed Areef.

Previously represented by Latheefa Qasim, the position became vacant following the recent ratification of Legal Professions Bill, a long-anticipated piece of legislation that aims to hold members of the legal profession accountable and ensure that lawyers perform their duties efficiently.

Maniu won the election against five other contestants with a total of 199 votes in his favour. The election was held on July 27 and was managed by the Elections Commission (EC).

His closest competitor, Lawyer Ali Rasheed, came second with 124 votes.

Only 404 of the 1,600 registered lawyers took part in the polls.

Maaniu filed a case at the High Court to swap the results of the 2018 presidential elections based on claims made by the then President Office's spokesperson, Ibrahim Muaz Ali.

However, he later expressed regret for filing the electoral case based on "clear lies" and requested the immediate withdrawal of the case.

In addition to Maaniu, the remaining members on the JSC include parliamentary representative Hisaan Hussain, Supreme Court representative Abdulla Areef, High Court representative Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, President's representative Masthoor Husny, the Parliament's citizen representative Abdul Hannan Ahmed and Juvenile Court Judge Mohamed Easa Fulhu who represents the Magistrate Courts.

The 10-member commission also features Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and Civil Service Commission President Dr Ali Shameem.
