The government submitted an amendment to parliament proposing to transfer the operations of National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) under Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.

The first reading of the bill, submitted by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Manadhoo MP Ahmed Haroon on behalf of the incumbent administration, took place in Wednesday's parliament session.

As per the National Social Health Insurance Act, NSPA runs under the Ministry of Health. However, following the administration change in 2018, NSPA's operations were shifted under Gender Ministry without amending the relevant laws and regulations.

NSPA is an agency established to administer the National Social Health Insurance Scheme and regulate and conduct Social Protection programmes under the Social Protection Act.

Moreover, the agency's financial assistance programmes utilise state funds to issue allowances for single parents and those with disabilities, in addition to providing 'Husnuvaa Aasandha', the government's universal health scheme.
