Abdul Maaniu Hussain, on Saturday, was elected as the lawyers' representative for the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Maniu won over four other contestants with a total of 199 votes in the election managed by the Elections Commission (EC).
His closest competitor, Lawyer Ali Rasheed, came second with 124 votes,
Former Information Commissioner Abdul Azeez Jamal Abu-Bakur received 37 votes, Haneefa Halid secured 27 votes and Ahmed Rasheed attained nine votes.
Only 404 of the 1,600 registered lawyers in Maldives cast their ballots at the polls held in the capital city of Male' and Addu City.
The remaining members on the JSC in addition to Maniu include parliamentary representative Hisaan Hussain, Supreme Court representative Abdulla Areef, High Court representative Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, President's representative Masthoor Husny, the Parliament's citizen representative Abdul Hannan Ahmed and Mohamed Easaafulhu who represents the Magistrate Courts.
Notably, the 10-member commission also features Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and Civil Service Commission President Dr Ali Shameem.
