Maldives seeks Comoros' support for IOIG 2023 bid

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Tuesday night presented a letter to the president of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, requesting support for Maldives' bid to host the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG).

The letter from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was presented at a meeting held in Moroni, where Foreign Minister Shahid extended greetings from President Solih to the leader of Comoros.

Comoros has also bid to host the 2023 IOIG.

During the call, Minister Shahid and President Assoumani discussed avenues to strengthen relations between the two island states.

The foreign minister was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Development, Ahmed Mahloof.

The foreign minister further met with Comoros' Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, El-Almine Souef, and Minister of Youth, Employment, Occupational Integration, Culture and Sports, Ladaenti Houmadi, during the visit.

The foreign minister and sports minister are key members of President Solih's Special Envoy, which was formed to garner support for Maldives' 2023 IOIG bid. The envoy has already visited Mauritius, Madagascar and Seychelles.
