Prosecutor General's (PG) Office, on Monday, revealed that three individuals were charged with the murder of Luthufar, a Bangladeshi expatriate reported missing in Lhaimagu, Shaviyani Atoll.

The PG Office stated that the suspects are being charged with First Degree Murder. Hearings for the case submitted to the Criminal Court on June 30 have already begun.

Police previously arrested four people who worked with the victim on the same boat in relation to the murder. However, three remain in remand until after their hearings as per the court order.

The three confessed to the crime whilst they were summoned for a hearing previously to make a decision on their remand. They further revealed details about the murder in the hearing.

Maldives Police Service previously revealed that Luthufaru was murdered by his crew members because of attempts by the victim to forcefully engage in same-sex relations.

Police further disclosed that Luthufaru was strangled to death and subsequently weights were attached to the body and sunk into the sea.

Police had recovered what were suspected to be Luthufaru's remains. As the trial is underway, Police did not reveal further details other than that tests were being carried out to identify the remains.
