The Elections Commission (EC) on Sunday authorised the formation of the 'Sunrise Party'.

EC spokesperson Ahmed Akram revealed that permission to complete necessary procedures to form the new political party was granted to Saeedha Rasheed.

As per the Political Parties Act, a party must have a minimum of 3,000 members to be officially registered at EC. Parties are allocated a three-month period following authorization to fulfil membership requirements.

In order to qualify for state financial assistance, a political party must secure more than 10,000 members.

In 2019, EC registered the People's National Congress (PNC) and the Labour Party. The elections watchdog also authorized the formation of 'Dharumavantha Party' in February.

Currently, there are a total of nine political parties registered in Maldives.
