Ambassador-designate of Maldives to the United Kingdom Dr Farahanaz Faisal, on Thursday, signed the Global Pledge on Media Freedom on behalf of the Maldivian government.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the Global Conference for Media Freedom that was inaugurated during the early hours of the day.
The Global Pledge on Media Freedom commits to speak out and take action together for the fundamental importance of media freedom for the security, prosperity and well-being of the society.
Moreover, the pledge encourages governments to take action to strengthen media freedom, bring together the civil society, media organisations, lawyers, journalists and communication experts for a brighter future for media.
Tackling the challenges faced by journalists and supporting the development of diverse, independent and public interest media are also key factors outlined in the pledge.
Countries signing the pledge will also meet annually to renew their commitments and address emerging threats and opportunities.
The Global Conference for Media Freedom was attended by designates, ambassadors and journalists of various countries. The conference concluded on Friday.
