A total of 419 kilograms of drugs, obtained in various operations, were destroyed on Wednesday.

Police disposed of the drugs at Dhoonidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, in relation to World Drug Day. The drugs, totalling MVR 414 million in value, were those in police possession since January 2014, seized in 3,165 individual cases.

According to the police, drugs found in major cases were also destroyed on Wednesday, including 149 kilograms of drugs found on the uninhabited island of Hulhuvarulaa, Gaafu Dhaaul Atoll, as well as 50 kilograms of drugs found on an Iranian vessel last May.

It marked the first time for such a large amount of drugs to be destroyed. Vice President Faisal Naseem, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed witnessed the event.

Drugs in police possession are destroyed by a five-person committee selected by the Prosecutor General.

Police stated that the drugs destroyed had gone through all legal processes. The drugs were weighed and the police retained samples weighing twice the required amount in order to convict the culprits behind the traffickings.
