Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Monday, departed to Russia to meet the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.

The visit marks the first instance the top diplomats of Maldives and Russia will meet to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

During the visit, Minister Shahid will hold discussions with Minister Lavrov on enhancing long-standing relations between Maldives and Russia.

Both ministers are also scheduled to sign an Agreement for the Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirements for Nationals of Russia and Nationals of Maldives.

The agreement will provide a 90-day visa on arrival for Maldivians travelling to Russia. The initiative aims to enhance a greater exchange of people to people contact between the two countries.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Ambassador of Maldives to Germany Ahmed Latheef, Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Shiuneen Rasheed and Desk Officer Mariyam Asif accompanied Minister Shahid on the visit.
