Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation announced Sunday that taxis will operate using metre fares starting July.
Deputy Minister of Transport Hidhaya Naseer revealed that the ministry opened submissions for proposals to create a mobile application for taxi services, until June. With the submission due date closed, Hidhaya said that they will look over the submitted proposals and select the best application.
The ministry has already designated the fare rates for the metre taxis. While the government previously stated that the prices would be revealed after Ramadan, Hidhaya said that the rates will be disclosed along with details about the chosen application next month.
Hidhaya further proclaimed that metred taxis will be operational by the end of July.
The government revealed earlier that a mobile application would be used to calculate the metre fare.
Currently, mobile applications are already in use for taxi services, providing ease of taxi bookings as well as allowing users to access information regarding the journey.
The Transport Ministry declared, however, that moving forward, taxi services will be only available through applications which are authorised by the government.
