Govt to launch active lifestyle program for senior citizens

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, on Monday, announced the commencement of a programme to promote active lifestyles for senior citizens.

The initiative will be a collaborative effort by Maldives Senior Citizens Organization, Maldives Girl Guide Association (MGGA), the Scout Association of Maldives as well as the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment.

The programme will include an awareness session on the necessary steps in maintaining good health and communal activities such as exchanging Eid gifts.

The first activity held under the programme is scheduled for June 7 and will be held at the Vilimale Social Center. Participation is open for elderly citizens over the age of 65.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Maloof stated that the aim of the programme was to conduct activities for senior citizens in a pleasant environment and enable people to spend quality time with them.

The ministry's Community Empowerment Consultant Fathmath Sheheziny noted the contribution of the Women's Development Committee (WDC) of the Male' City Council in finding participants for the programme and arranging their transport to Vilimale'.

Badru Naseer from the Maldives Senior Citizens Organization expressed gratitude to the Community Empowerment Ministry for their support. Formerly a prominent radio presenter, Badru also said that he was glad that the government was working to improve the lives of senior citizens.

While the organization has hosted activities for senior citizens since 2017, these activities will now be carried out with the ministry's support.
