The government has allocated the sum of MVR 5 million towards the construction of a Community Centre in Foakaidhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, from the grant assistance provided by India.

Announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, the community centre will cater to various youth-related activities, provide a space for the Women’s Development Council's administrative needs, library services as well as a space for atoll and regional level seminars, workshops and conferences.

The ministry stated that a lack of social infrastructure on the island to conduct communal activities and cater to the demands of varying age groups was previously noted by councils and the government.

India provided the grant assistance through the USD 6.9 million (MVR 100 million) granted to Maldives during the visit of Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj in March 2019.

The aim of the grant assistance is to conduct high-impact socio-economic development projects across the country.
