Newly elected Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, on Tuesday night, revealed that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inivited Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi to deliver an address in the Maldivian parliament during his official visit to Maldives.
In the speech delivered by Nasheed after he was sworn in as parliament speaker, he stated that a motion will be proposed in the first parliament session, allowing Modi to deliver his address, as foreign entities may only speak in parliament with the majority vote of members.
Indian media reports that Modi's first official overseas visit after being recently elected for his second term will be to Maldives from June 7 to 8. Modi's first ever visit to Maldives was for President Solih's inauguration ceremony on November 17, 2018.
The current government's first official state visit to India took place shortly after President Solih assumed office, in an attempt to strengthen the bilateral relations between Maldives and India which deteriorated in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.
