Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla on Wednesday inaugurated a book donation programme for prisons.

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister declared that the initiative was part of the efforts to improve the situations in jails.

He requested the public to make donations, noting that support from students, associations, businesses and government institutions in particular was vital for the success of the programme.

Donations can be made from 0900 to 1500 hours, and 2100 to 2300 hours on working days and Saturday, and from 0900 to 1100 hours on Friday.

The programme ends coming Saturday.

The minister stated that should the initiative prove successful, the authorities could establish libraries in all the prisons.

"We hope to rehabilitate and educate inmates, and reintegrate them back into society as individuals that would make a positive change", he said.

It was a pledge of the current administration to improve the conditions of prisons across the country. As part of the state's efforts to better treat inmates, the home ministry also decided to increase the wages of working inmates.
