Maldives Police Service on Tuesday stated that they have identified the perpetrators who abused a woman with special needs in Feydhoo, Shaviyani Atoll.
The elderly woman was found tied to a pole with a sack over her head and tortured last week.
Police have yet to arrest those implicated in the matter.
According to a police spokesperson, the case is nearing the conclusion of its investigation and will soon be forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office.
Feydhoo Island Council revealed that passers-by had untied the woman. A picture of her, tied to the pole, circulated on social media.
Reportedly the woman was previously assaulted for pestering other residents on the streets.
While the woman has five children and other relatives living on the island, local media reports that her family do not look after her much.
The 50-year-old woman has since been placed under government protection by the Ministry of Gender and Family.
