The state on Wednesday night placed under its protection a woman with special needs from Feydhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, who was found tied to a pole with a sack over her head and tortured earlier this week.

A team from the Ministry of Gender and Family and Maldives Police Service travelled to the island to pick up the 50-year-old, who was found tied up on Monday. She was transported to an institution under the government’s protection.

Gender Minister Shidhatha Shareef condemned the inhumane act.

The minister tweeted that the woman was placed under government protection once the state received report of the incident. She assured that the perpetrators who tortured the woman would be brought to justice.

A tweet from the ministry stated that it would do everything in its power to capture the assailants.

Feydhoo Island Council revealed that passers-by had untied the woman. A picture of her, tied to the pole, circulated on social media.

Reportedly the woman was previously assaulted for pestering other residents on the streets.

While the woman has five children and other relatives living on the island, local media reports that her family do not look after her much.
