President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Wednesday, the formation of the five-member ‘Salary and Minimum Wage Advisory Board’ to the Ministry of Economic Development.
Marking Labour Day, which falls on May 1, the President published a tweet expressing his satisfaction on having established the counsel body, first of its kind in the country.
The board comprises of five members, of which two notable representatives are known to be Mohamed Ali Janah, the current Chairman of the Hotels and Resorts Construction (HRC) and President of the Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MNACI), as well as Mauroof Zakir, the General Secretary of the Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM).
The four members of the board are;

Earlier in January, the Maldives Democratic Party, which leads the ruling coalition, proposed a nation-wide minimum wage requirement of MVR 200 per day. Over a 30-day period, this would amount to MVR 6,000.
The proposed bill, which extensively details the regulations for implementing the increased minimum wage, is set to be submitted to parliament for review shortly after April’s newly-elected representatives are sworn into office.
Allocating a minimum wage was one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s key electoral pledges.
